About Norfolk

Norfolk, Virginia is the second largest city in the state and one of the busiest ports in the United States. Located in southeastern Virginia near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, the city's miles of waterfront property are home to the U.S. Navy's most important base and the headquarters of international shipping giant Maersk Line, Ltd.

Norfolk serves as the central business and industrial district for the entire Hampton Roads metro area, which includes nearby Newport News and Virginia Beach. The Hampton Roads, or Tidewater, is a spacious natural harbor made up of several river mouths converging to meet the bay. Such an advantageous harbor made Norfolk a busy hub for commerce very early on Virginia's time as a British colony.

Fires and a hard shelling during the Revolutionary War left only one colonial-era building standing in Norfolk: the historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Almost a century later Norfolk saw the first naval battle between ironclad ships when the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia clashed during the Civil War.

Unsurprisingly, Norfolk's commercial downtown center is located just blocks from the riverfront. The area has been undergoing substantial revitalization in recent years with Granby Street reclaiming its role as an important place for shopping, entertainment, and business. It is one of Norfolk's most popular destinations for livers of the nightlife. Downtown also holds The Waterside festival marketplace and Nauticus, a modern maritime museum that houses the U.S.S. Wisconsin. This Iowa-class battleship was one of the last of its kind to be built. She served from World War II until Desert Storm and is now on exhibit to the public.

Of course, Norfolk has far more to offer than metal warships and industry. People with interests more artistic than martial will appreciate Wells Theatre where the Virginia Stage Company performs year-round, or perhaps catch a performance by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra at Chrysler Hall. These are both downtown but fans of a quieter atmosphere might prefer to visit Willoughby Spit or Ocean View. These primarily residential districts offer beachfront lodgings and all sorts of aquatic activities.

The Ghent neighborhood contains some of Norfolk's most popular attractions. The Chrysler Museum of Art boasts an impressive collection of artwork from the last five thousand years. It also plays host to traveling exhibitions from time to time. Although it operates throughout the state, the Virginia Opera has its home base in Ghent at the Harrison Opera House.
